Rumours
The vastness of the frontier universe has attracted plenty of rumour mongers. The situation has not been helped by the mention of unfinished features in the frontier manual. Just to clear things up, here is what does and does not exist in Frontier:
The Mirage:
The Mirage is an imaginary ship thought to exist in the Amiga version.
It is described as looking like a Thargoid ship from Elite. (Allegedly)
the Mirage can be obtained by gaining maximum Imperial military rank
and acieving ELITE rating. A mission is given (I have no idea what the
task is) and the reward is the Mirage ship. I have found no evidence to
suggest it exists.
Reflective Armour:
The Frontier manual suggests that the Empire are developing reflective armour:
"There are also words that the Imperial Navy are developing reflective
armour which reflects much of the laser's energy back along the incoming
path, though this is strongly denied." I have not found this to be true.
Class 4 Military Drives:
Reports that Class 4 Military drives have been manufactured have some truth in them.
Class 4 drives cannot be bought in the game but do exist, and may be obtained
by hacking. (See downloads section for hackers).
Lighter Drives
The manual also claims that lighter engines are in the making:
"Military Hyperdrives are not widely available and there are only three
classes for sale. The reason is thought to be instability occuring in bigger
drives, but rumours say that military engineers are working on this problem.
They are also reputed to be making even lighter engines."
The Black Hole:
David Braben himself claimed that at the centre of the Frontier Galaxy there
is a Black Hole. As the galaxy is so large and the exact location of the
centre so hard to find, this has yet to be proven. Perhaps there really
is a Black Hole or maybe it's just an attempt to keep us playing...
It worked on me!
The Lone Thargoid:
David Braben also claimed that there was one Thargoid (insectoid alien from Elite)
somewhere in the Frontier Universe. He later admitted that there is not,
unless you include the strange thargoid-shaped object in some military bases.
(A purple octagonal thing).
